Up Your Credit Score! 3 Easy Steps for Fixing Credit Report Errors

how to fight credit reporting errorsCredit reports make a huge impact on how we live our lives. Almost any time you apply for credit, your credit report is used. It contains information about where you live, where you work, who you owe money to, and whether you pay your bills. If someone was keeping all this personal information about you, wouldn’t you want to make sure it’s accurate?

There are, in fact, three major companies keeping this information about you: Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. All credit reporting agencies have to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a federal law that prohibits putting inaccurate or misleading information in your credit report.

These three easy steps will help you to ensure that there is no inaccurate information on your credit report, or to remove inaccurate information if it’s being reported.

 1. Get Official Copies of Your Credit Report

You can’t tell if your credit report is inaccurate if you don’t look at your credit report. The two best ways to get it are by calling Annual Credit Report at (877) 322-8228 or by downloading your credit reports from Annual Credit Report at www.annualcreditreport.com.

We do not recommend getting your report from Credit Karma or other similar services because they don’t have complete information.

 2. Review Your Credit Report for Errors

Take a few minutes and review the credit report. Does it list your correct name? Address? Are there accounts you’ve never heard of? Are there inquiries from creditors that you have no relationship with? If there is anything that stands out, make a note of it so you can dispute it.

 3. Contact an Attorney for Help on Errors Creditors or the Credit Bureaus Refuse to Fix
