You Have The Right to a Free Credit Report – Here’s the Best Place to Get It

There are numerous companies advertising paid credit reports, free credit reports, credit scores, and everything in between. They range from Credit Karma to monthly credit reporting services from each of the three major credit bureaus (technically called consumer reporting agencies), Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Free Annual Credit Report

It’s hard to know where you should get your credit report from, and which is the most reliable source. After all, 1 in 4 consumers has inaccurate or outdated information on their credit reports, according to one study.

The best place to get your credit report from is the government website, AnnualCreditReport.com. If you don’t want to go online, you can call Annual Credit Report at (877) 322-8228 and they will send you your credit report within about two weeks.

The government required Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to set up this site and allow consumers to obtain all three credit reports at once.

Their website works by asking you to verify certain information like your name, Social Security Number, and information about financial accounts you have, so they can be sure it’s you. Then you can download a copy of your credit report.

How much does it cost? It’s free to get all three reports once per year. And if you have already gotten your free report for the year, Massachusetts residents pay only $8 for additional reports.

We recommend against purchasing your credit report directly from the credit reporting agencies. They may have hidden online agreements that require you to arbitrate any disputes. This prohibits you from filing a case under the Fair Credit Reporting Act using a credit reporting attorney if there is inaccurate information that they refuse to remove.

It is vitally important to keep the information on your credit report accurate. What your report says determines who will give you credit, and for how much. It determines where you live, what kind of car you drive, and what you can buy.

Consumer who call our office often find out too late that there was inaccurate information on their credit reports, typically after a mortgage or other credit application is denied.
