Credit Report a Nightmare? John Oliver Thinks So, Too

In a recent episode of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver took the credit reporting agencies to task and discussed what a nightmare a credit report can be.

These companies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, keep reports on most Americans who have ever had a financial account. The information in our credit reports shapes every aspect of our lives, from the neighborhood we can live in to the kind of car we can drive.

Credit reports are even used to get a job. Approximately 47% of employers do credit checks —  even Benihana employees “people who run those fireworks tents”!

Many people suffer from errors on their credit reports caused by inaccurate accounts, or even having their credit report mixed with the report of someone who has the same name. In all, about 1 in 4 people have inaccurate information on their credit reports.
